The Federal University of Lafia (FULAFIA) has reaffirmed its commitment to environmental sustainability and the creation of a serene learning environment through the commencement of a large-scale tree and flower planting exercise under its Great Green Campus Initiative at the University’s Permanent Site.
The environmental beautification exercise commenced at 7:00 a.m. on Saturday, 4th July, 2026, following a brief opening ceremony at the University’s Permanent Site. The Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Isa Kida, was represented at the event by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Aleruchi Chuku, who also serves as Chairman of the FULAFIA Great Green Campus Committee. Under his leadership, participants embarked on a coordinated tree and flower planting exercise aimed at advancing the University’s vision of a greener, more sustainable, and aesthetically appealing campus.
Also in attendance were Dr. Hawa Kana, Head of the Department of Plant Science, members of staff of the department, and students who actively participated in the tree and flower planting, landscaping, and campus beautification exercise. Their collective efforts are aimed at transforming the University’s permanent campus into a greener, healthier, and more aesthetically appealing environment that promotes effective teaching, learning, and research.
For the participating students of the Department of Plant Science, the exercise also serves as an important practical component of their academic programme. Their participation forms part of their continuous assessment, with performance to be evaluated and graded at the end of the semester.
The FULAFIA Great Green Campus Committee, established by the Vice-Chancellor, Professor Mohammed Isa Kida, and chaired by the Deputy Vice-Chancellor (Administration), Professor Aleruchi Chuku, is spearheading the initiative as part of the University’s long-term commitment to environmental sustainability and campus development. The project is designed to achieve several strategic objectives, including enhancing the aesthetic appeal of the University through the planting of trees and flowers, stabilizing the sandy soil to prevent land degradation and erosion in vulnerable areas, and mitigating the effects of the intense heat experienced in Lafia by increasing tree cover, providing natural shade, and creating cooler microclimates that promote a more conducive teaching and learning environment.
Speaking on the significance of the initiative, the University’s management reaffirmed its commitment to developing a campus that not only supports academic excellence but also promotes environmental responsibility and sustainable development. The Great Green Campus Initiative reflects the University’s vision of building a modern, eco-friendly institution where nature and learning thrive together.
The University encourages members of the campus community to support the initiative by protecting the newly planted trees and flowers and embracing environmentally responsible practices that will ensure the continued success of the project.
Federal University of Lafia remains committed to building a greener, more beautiful, and sustainable campus for present and future generations.
